Moving to Alicante — the practical 2026 guide
Before you fly
Spain's NIE (foreigner ID) is the document everything else hangs on. Apply at your local Spanish consulate before you go — appointments in Alicante itself can take weeks. Bring two copies of everything.
Open a Spanish bank account once you arrive. Several digital banks accept NIE applications online; you'll still need an in-person verification for the local utilities.
From ALC airport
Alicante–Elche airport (ALC) sits 9 km southwest of the city. The C-6 bus runs every 20 minutes to the centre for €4. For door-to-door arrival with luggage, pre-book a fixed-price transfer.
Neighbourhoods
- Casco Antiguo — old town, walkable, lively at night.
- Ensanche Diputación — wide avenues, family-friendly, good rentals.
- Playa de San Juan — beachfront, residential, tram into town.
- Cabo de las Huertas — quiet coves, professionals and families.
Daily essentials
Empadronamiento (registering at your address) unlocks healthcare and schools. Bring your rental contract and passport to the Junta del Distrito office.
Mercadona for groceries; Consum for organic and local brands; ALDI and Lidl for budget. The Mercado Central is the place for fish and ham.
Laundry & local services
Most Alicante apartments come without a dryer. Locals either air-dry on the terrace or use a pickup service — DropMe® covers central Alicante with 24-hour turnaround on laundry and dry cleaning.
